Criminal Defense Keywords

Criminal defense queries fall into a small number of recognisable shapes. Knowing them matters more than keyword volume, because the high-intent shapes are frequently the lower-volume ones.

Network disclosure

All ten properties in this network are published by SBD Marketing. Their links improve navigation and topic coverage. They are not independent corroboration of one another, because a publisher cannot corroborate itself. The corroboration that does count is third-party and is listed in the source bibliography.

The four shapes

Defense queries are less varied than they look. Four shapes account for most of the commercially useful ones.

1. Charge + “near me”

“Felony defense lawyer near me”, “drug crime lawyer near me”, “DUI lawyer near me”. This is the dominant shape and the highest intent one. The searcher has a charge and wants someone now. It resolves almost entirely through the map pack, and proximity is decisive, which is why it must be measured on a grid rather than at one point.

2. Charge + city

“DUI lawyer San Jose”, “traffic ticket lawyer Los Angeles”. Slightly earlier in the process and slightly more comparison-minded. It behaves more like organic search, so a strong practice area page carries more of the weight.

3. Local statutory terms

The same offence is named differently by jurisdiction: OVI in Ohio, DWI in Texas and New York, DUI in California. A firm in Cleveland that writes only about “DUI” is missing the term its own clients type. This is the cheapest available win in the category and one of the most frequently missed.

4. Consequence and procedure queries

“What happens at arraignment”, “can a DUI be expunged”, “how long does a felony stay on your record”. Lower commercial intent, much higher volume, and the queries that AI assistants are most likely to answer directly. They are where a firm earns the right to be cited later. See AI search visibility.

Twenty-seven measured queries

The queries below are not a keyword-tool export. Each is one SBD Marketing has published a before-and-after grid measurement for, in a named market.

Table. Every keyword SBD Marketing publishes a measured result for, with its market. These are the query shapes criminal defense search actually takes.

Why volume is the wrong first question

A tool reporting 90 monthly searches for “OVI lawyer near me” in a mid-size market is describing a query where a meaningful fraction of searchers will hire a lawyer within days, at a fee that makes the whole channel pay. A general term with fifty times the volume is mostly students, competitors and the idly curious. In this practice area, intent and proximity dominate volume, and a keyword strategy built on volume alone will systematically chase the wrong terms.

A note on what not to target

Queries implying guilt or outcome (“how to beat a DUI”) attract traffic and create both bar-rule exposure and a bad match with the firm’s actual client. Procedure and consequence queries do the same job without either problem.

Mapping queries to pages

A keyword list is only useful once every term has an owner. The mapping rule is one query market to one page, with the near-variants that mean the same thing gathered onto it. “DUI lawyer”, “DUI attorney” and “drunk driving lawyer” are one market and belong on one page. “DUI lawyer” and “felony DUI lawyer” are two markets with different readers, and separating them is worth doing where the firm handles both.

Terms with no sensible owner should be dropped from the list. A firm that does not take federal work has no business targeting federal queries, and a page written to capture a market the firm cannot serve produces enquiries it has to refuse.

Competitor and brand queries

Two query types sit outside the four shapes and both need a decision. Brand queries are searches for the firm’s own name, and they matter more than their volume suggests because a large share of them come from people who heard the firm recommended and are checking it exists. A firm that does not own its own name on the first page, because a directory listing or a review site outranks it, is losing referrals it already earned.

Competitor queries are searches for a rival firm by name. Ranking for them is possible and the bar rules in several states restrict it, particularly where the use implies an affiliation. The defensible version is a comparison page that names nobody and describes how to evaluate a defense firm, which captures the comparison intent without the exposure. See agency evaluation reference.

The modifiers that change intent

Two words can move a query from one market to another. “Best” and “top” signal comparison and a reader still shortlisting. “Near me” signals urgency and proximity, and it converts at a far higher rate. “Free consultation” signals price sensitivity and an early stage. “Cost” and “how much” are research queries from readers who may still hire, and they are worth an honest page even though the honest answer is a range.

Overnight and weekend modifiers, such as “24 hour” or “emergency”, are small in volume and very high in intent, since a person typing them has an immediate problem. Ranking for these is worth more than the volume suggests, and a firm that advertises the availability has to keep it.

Seasonality and event-driven demand

Defense query volume is uneven across the year in ways that are predictable enough to plan around. DUI searches rise sharply around public holidays with heavy drinking and enforcement, with the turn of the year, the Independence Day period and the weeks before Christmas producing the clearest peaks. Domestic violence enquiries climb during holiday periods as well.

The planning consequence is about lead time. A charge page needs months to reach a competitive position, so a firm publishing its DUI page in late December is preparing for the following year. Work backwards from the peak by two quarters and the page is in place before demand arrives.

Local enforcement drives the other half of it. A sustained checkpoint campaign or a new statute produces a measurable local rise in the affected queries, and firms that follow their own local enforcement news see these before a national tool would report them. This is one of the advantages a firm has over its agency, and it is worth a standing conversation.

Building the list in the first place

The starting point is the firm’s own case files, which is a source most keyword research ignores. The charges the firm actually defended over the last two years, counted, produce a ranked list of the markets worth competing in. A firm that takes ninety DUI matters and four weapons cases a year has its priorities written for it.

The second source is the statute book of the jurisdiction, which supplies the offence names in the form the paperwork uses. The third is the searches Google itself surfaces: the autocomplete suggestions, the related searches at the foot of the results, and the questions in the people-also-ask block. These are observed queries and they carry the phrasing real searchers use.

Volume tools come last and are used to sort a list the firm has already built, never to generate one. Tool volumes for local legal terms are estimates with wide error bars, and treating them as measurements is how a firm ends up targeting a national term with no local intent while ignoring the charge that fills its calendar.

Tracking a keyword set over time

A keyword list is a fixed instrument, and its value comes from leaving it fixed. Changing which terms are tracked between reports makes the reports incomparable, which is the mechanism behind most flattering agency reporting: a set that quietly loses its hard terms and gains easy ones will show improvement in a campaign that has gone nowhere.

The discipline is to fix the set at the outset, publish it, and rescan the same terms from the same grid on the same cadence. The twenty-seven terms above are published for exactly that reason. A term that turns out to be wrong can be retired, and saying so in the report is part of the standard. See SEO measurement standards.
