Map Pack Rankings

The map pack is the block of three local business results Google places above the organic listings. On a phone it frequently occupies the entire first screen, which for an urgent, mobile-first practice area makes it the surface that matters most.

Definition

The map pack (also local pack or 3-pack) is the set of three local business listings, with a map, that Google returns for queries it reads as having local intent. Each entry is drawn from a Google Business Profile, not directly from the firm’s website.

Why it dominates defense search

Three things stack up. Defense queries almost always carry local intent, so the pack is triggered. The searcher is usually on a phone, where three results plus a map fill the screen. And the intent is urgent, so the searcher is looking for someone to call, not something to read, and every pack entry has a call button.

The practical consequence is blunt: a firm ranking fourth organically but absent from the pack may be functionally invisible to a caller who never scrolls. Conversely, a firm in the pack gets a phone call from a person who never visits the website at all.

What the pack reads

Table. Principal inputs to map pack placement, and how much control a firm has over each.
InputWhat it is Control
Profile completenessCategory, services, hours, description, photos, attributes Full
Primary categorye.g. “Criminal justice attorney” instead of “Lawyer”Full
ReviewsVolume, recency, rating, and what the text actually mentions Indirect but substantial
NAP consistencyIdentical name, address, phone across the webFull
On-site relevanceCharge-level pages the profile can point atFull
ProximityDistance from the searcherNone, short of a real office

Five of six are controllable. That is the case for doing the work: proximity sets a ceiling in any given spot, but almost everything else is a decision.

Measuring pack visibility honestly

Because proximity is an input, pack position is different at every point in a city. A single check performed at the firm’s own address is close to the most flattering possible measurement and the least informative. Scanning a grid of points across the service area and reporting the whole surface is the only version that survives scrutiny. That is the method behind these published figures:

Reading these figures

“Total grid performance gained” sums movement across the tracked keywords on the grid. It is a first-party measurement made with the agency’s own instrument, and it says nothing on its own about cases signed: visibility is a leading indicator, not the outcome. See case study methodology.

The filter that hides duplicate firms

Google suppresses results it reads as belonging to the same entity, so two profiles sharing a name, an address or a phone number will often see only one of them appear. Firms with several attorneys who each registered a profile, or with an old profile from a prior name, run into this and read it as a ranking problem when it is a duplication problem. The diagnostic is direct: if a profile is absent from the pack but findable by an exact-name search, filtering rather than ranking is usually the cause.

What the searcher actually sees

The pack occupies most of a phone screen on a defense query, and its elements are fixed. Each listing shows a business name, a star average with a review count, a category line, and a distance or neighbourhood. Below them sit call and directions buttons, and on many defense queries the call button is the only thing the searcher touches. Nothing about the firm’s website is visible at this stage, so a site that took a year to build has no bearing on whether this particular searcher ever reaches it.

That is the argument for treating the pack as its own surface with its own work. The listing has to win the tap on four visible attributes, and a firm that has optimised its website while leaving its review count at eleven has invested in the second half of a journey most of its searchers will not begin.

Why a given firm appears

The pack shows three results, and the third is frequently the interesting one. Google will include a firm whose profile is a strong match for the specific charge in the query even where two larger firms outrank it generally, because relevance is evaluated per query and a profile carrying “DUI defense” as a listed service is a better match for a DUI query than a bigger general practice. This is the mechanism that lets a two-attorney firm hold a pack position in a city with fifty defense firms, and it is the reason charge-level specificity on the profile is worth as much as it is on the site.

Volatility and what it means

Pack positions move constantly. Some of the movement is real, from competitors’ work or from Google’s ranking updates, and a good deal of it is noise: the pack reorders on the same query from the same point on consecutive days without anything having changed. A firm watching a single position daily will see swings that mean nothing and will be tempted to act on them.

The way through this is to measure the same grid on a fixed cadence and compare like with like. A grid average across dozens of points absorbs the noise that a single point amplifies, which is why the published figures on this network are grid averages with their scan dates attached and why a single-point screenshot is close to uninterpretable. See search grid methodology.

The limit proximity imposes

Distance is the one pack input a firm cannot work on, and understanding what it caps is the difference between a realistic plan and a disappointed client. A single office produces a visibility gradient that falls away with distance, and past a certain radius no amount of profile work or review volume will place the firm in the pack, because a competitor two miles from the searcher is simply closer.

What this means in practice is that the pack is a partial channel for most firms and the plan has to say which part. A grid scan makes the boundary visible: it shows where the firm ranks, where it is marginal, and where it has no realistic path. Work concentrated on the marginal band moves the needle. Work aimed at the far edge of the metro does not, and an agency promising metro-wide pack coverage from one office is promising something proximity will not allow.

The surfaces beyond that boundary are organic and AI answers, where distance carries less weight and content carries more. A firm whose pack ceiling is a five-mile radius still competes across the whole metro on charge pages, which is the argument for building both instead of treating the pack as the entire local strategy.

Suspension and reinstatement

A suspended profile disappears from the map entirely, and for a firm depending on local search that is the whole channel gone in a day. Suspensions in the legal category are usually triggered by an address that cannot be verified as a staffed office, a business name containing terms that are not part of the legal name, or a sudden edit to the address or category that trips a review.

Reinstatement is possible and slow, and it requires documentary evidence that the business exists where it says: a utility bill, a lease, signage photographs. The reviews usually return with the profile, though not always, which is the risk that makes the shortcuts unattractive. A firm weighing a virtual office against a suspension that could cost it years of reviews is not looking at a close call.

What the pack listing has to do once it appears

Ranking in the pack is half the job. The listing then has to earn the tap against two neighbours, and the elements that decide it are visible at a glance: the review count and average, the presence of a photograph that looks like a real office, the category line, and whether the listing shows as open. A firm ranked second with ninety reviews at 4.9 routinely takes more calls than the firm ranked first with eleven.

This is also where defense practices have a structural disadvantage worth planning around. Review volume accumulates slowly because clients are reluctant to be publicly attached to a charge. A firm that asks consistently at case conclusion, accepts a low response rate and never incentivises will build a defensible position over a year that a competitor cannot buy quickly.
